Denise Walser-Kolar began her journey into botanical art after receiving a beginner botanical art class from her parents as a birthday gift in 2003. She has a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and Illustration from the College of Visual Arts in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and she worked for the American Society of Botanical Artists (as both Executive Director and as Conference Coordinator) for six years, leaving in 2022 to become a full-time artist.
Denise specializes in painting botanical and nature art on vellum and loves teaching others how to paint on vellum. She teaches workshops in the United States and Europe as well as teaching online classes. Awards include the ASBA Diane Bouchier Artist Award for Excellence in Botanical Art and a Silver-Gilt medal from the Royal Horticultural Society. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation. Denise is currently working on a series of paintings inspired by the work of 16th Century Illuminator, Joris Hoefnagel.
