As an artist I have worked with most mediums but my current work is with beeswax – encaustic and cold wax.
Encaustic painting is an ancient art done with beeswax, tree resin and pigment heated to a molten state. It has a very fluid, luminous quality. It also has a mind of its own. I like the way it takes me in new directions and gives me unexpected inspiration. I usually paint in many layers fusing each layer into the previous one. Using a variety of techniques these colors can be brought to the surface and become a part of the composition. Encaustic is a very versatile medium which can be used for collage, texture and fluid expression. It is invitingly touchable. Cold wax uses much the same ingredients, but the wax and resin are made into an emulsion, then mixed with pigment or paint without heat so it is not fluid but has a velvety matte surface. It is amenable to many styles of painting. As an abstract artist I enjoy the mark making, the eroding back to previous colors, the layering of translucent color over solid color, and the building of texture real and perceived.
