Fiber Artist
Lynn Bartley’s collages have evolved from her love of textiles, her delight in found objects, and her compulsion to gather them together. “I thoroughly enjoy holding and manipulating the various pieces, exploring their visual and conceptual connections. The act of assembly helps reveal their junctions and is a tactile pleasure.
“Although I describe my work as fiber art, my studio houses collections of shells, buttons, hardware, beads, lace, feathers, and numerous miscellaneous items (which refuse to be neatly categorized) amid an array of textiles. They constitute my treasure trove. I search in antique shops and hardware stores, on beaches and on-line, in friends’ and family’s caches, in fabric stores from designer to discount. I hunt and gather. Some objects resonate with my sense of delight. Some are chosen, worn and damaged, for the story they tell. Some simply please my eye. They all invite touch.
“I create my collages by finding the connections between these incongruous bits and pieces. Meanings shift, and they tell a new story. They were scraps and orphans. Now I find the once disparate elements possess beauty and significance, evoking memories and emotions. I hope they will speak to you as well.”
