Hee June Shin

“I am thrilled to be able to paint. The object of my painting is light. What light does to the color and form never ceases to fascinate me.  They are momentary but can be explored and enjoyed by observation and interpretation. Each moment is a new song of  unique colors. It is a privilege to ponder and to communicate it in my paintings.” Sing to the Lord a new song, all the earth! Psalm 96:1

A native of Korea, HeeJune came to USA to study nutrition. With a master’s degree in public health nutrition, she is now pursuing the study of painting.  As a member of Oil Painters of America and a signature member of MN Watercolor Society, she received many awards including First honors. Her paintings were accepted at the Fine Arts Exhibition, at the MN State Fair in 2002, 2008 and 2012.  Tuscan Vineyard was the featured painting of  thewinefest.org  for U. of M. Amplatz Children’s Hospital in 2011. She received McKnight Established Artist Grant in 2012.

Through her interest in art history and travels to museums around the world, she is inspired to become a representational painter of the post impressionism era with an emphasis on visual perception of color. She defines herself as a Colorist in the tradition of Monet in France and Hawthorne-Hensche in USA. Colorists attempt to see and render objects in color variations in the light  key in which they are seen. Her painting starts with abstract shapes of colors in the right relationship to each other  and then gradually emerges with form and air to represent the light effect. She relishes freshness and intimacy of stroke that a palette knife brings. The variety of stokes from her palette knife speaks the tactile sensitivity she acquired from the brushwork in Chinese calligraphy.

Her original paintings, prints, and cards are available at the SEMVA art gallery.
